Addictions come in 2 “flavors:" alcohol/substance abuse and dependence, and “behavioral” addiction, such as sexual, gambling, and internet addictions. Food addictions and eating disorders are at the interface. All addictions are known to affect dopamine activity in similar areas of the brain. Dr. Oklan is experienced in working with the 12 step model, as well as alternative approaches to treatment. He utilizes a gentle, therapeutic detoxification method from alcohol and drugs in an intensive outpatient setting, or may refer to appropriate inpatient or residential programs when an outpatient approach is not feasible. He is a leading practitioner in the use of buprenorphine (Suboxone), a medication that can help in the management of addiction to opiate and pain pills, epidemic in teens and young adults.
